Ep. #126 - Author James Belt Shares Practical Solutions that Bring Hope to Those in Need Both Locally and Internationally

Since my podcast is about hope, it was wonderful to have my guest James Belt share about his book titled Hope Realized-How the Power of Practical and Spiritual Development Can Diminish Poverty and Expose the Lie of Hopelessness. James is an author and a family man and businessman who is passionate about giving hope to others, not only in a physical or practical way, but also importantly spiritually.

He was raised in a Christian home and went to college, majoring in finance, eventually joining his father in the family business. But what happened to James that impacted him so much? He reluctantly joined his family on a missionary trip to Nicaragua where he witnessed people living in significant poverty and a life of hopelessness.  He felt God’s leading to return there to help the people and he did.  He shares his journeys and discoveries – what he learned about himself and from the people there. He gives us a new perspective on why economic inequality exists so that we can all help to end it.  He also provides practical community outreach ideas right here in our own communities, not just for those who want to serve on a missionary team in a foreign country. The important question is – are we fulfilling our God-given potentials and are we helping others as well?

My guest Laurie Besden is such an amazing lady!  Laurie is an attorney who once lost her privilege to practice law due to severe drug addiction and the crimes associated with addiction.  But, she turned her life around and has served for 8 years as executive director of Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers of Pennsylvania, where she assists lawyers, law students and judges and their families with all sorts of mental health issues and addictions.  Laurie shares her story in a very forthright manner, making no excuses for the life she once led and the manipulations and lies and crimes that entangled her world – all for the next fix.  How did she go from being addicted and in jail to becoming the executive director of an organization that has helped thousands of people in the legal field and their families? Stay tuned as she shares how someone reached out to her after an arrest and stood by her side as she went through rehab and recovery, and eventually obtained a governor’s pardon.

If anyone needs assistance or knows of someone who does, please call the confidential helpline 888-999-1941.  It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and you do not have to be in Pennsylvania to get support.

Ep. #109 - Charity:Water‘s Chief Global Water Officer Christoph Gorder Shares the Nonprofit’s Dedicated Mission to Provide Clean Water to Those in Need

Do you know that there are millions of people all over the world who still do not have access to clean water? Do you know that there is a nonprofit named Charity:Water that has been dedicated to providing clean water access through water projects? I did not know either of these things and I am ashamed to admit it. It was not until I read the NY Times bestselling book Thirst: A Story of Redemption, Compassion and a Mission to Bring Clean Water to the World that I realized the desperate need of people in so many countries for clean water, the diseases and sicknesses that adults and children suffer from drinking dirty water, and all that this amazing organization is doing.

Its founder Scott Harrison, the author of the book, has built an impressive operation that is now in 29 countries providing people with this basic necessity.  I reached out to Charity:Water to be on my podcast so that you can learn more about all that it is doing and the tremendous impact it has made.

This is part 1 with Christoph Gorder who is its chief global water officer and who is on the executive and administrative side, instrumental in overseeing clean water programs. You will learn all about Charity:Water and its goals and accomplishments.  Part 2 will be next month with Tyler Riewer, who most recently has been on the ground in Nepal for Charity:Water.
